Because Angelina Jolie Pitt has shared so openly about her testing for the BRCA gene, which increases the risk of cancer, and her openness about the surgeries that have followed, she’s made us look at breast cancer and ovarian cancer again. Not that we haven’t all heard it before, I suppose, but watching and listening to this icon of beauty talk about what is happening to her, right here, right now, we seem to be hearing it better. The number of tests for the BRCA gene has doubled since Angelina “came out,” as it were. And that’s a very, very good thing. Lives have been saved, there’s no doubt. Stigma has been removed, or at least reduced.
At the same time, of course, doctors and researchers continue to work to fight these diseases. Here’s a short update I found on on advancements and myths about breast cancer, published in Vibrant Nation. While you’re in the mood to face the facts, give it a read.
