Last year MediaBistro published an article by Terri Yablonsky Stat that appeared originally in My Silver Age on the trend toward shared housing among Boomer and older women, and much of what is discussed is pretty common knowledge these days. But Yablonsky did share one bit of data that’s not so well known: the rate of divorce among those 50 and over has doubled since 1990, according to the National Center for Family & Marriage Research. There’s a term for this now: “gray divorce.”
The article goes on to provide a checklist of things to consider, discuss, and put down in writing when considering living with a roommate. It’s a good guide to get you started. There’s also an illustrative story of two women – Gloria Flores, 85, and Linda Clark, 64, who decided to move in together for different reasons and have found the arrangement to be beneficial in a host of ways.
