Ally Hirschlag just published a post on SheKnows about “Granny Chic” – what she sees as “granny” fashion elements making a bold step forward in the fashion world. She applauds it. I do too.
First is the emergence of silver hair as beautiful. We always knew silver hair was beautiful, didn’t we? But the media and particularly the world of fashion pretended it wasn’t for so long that “gray hair” became synonymous in our culture with horror and shame. And so it was for all of our growing up years. But now, says Ally, silver hair is in, it’s chic, it’s being celebrated, and it makes us feel beautiful, because it is. Zosia Mamet showed up at the premiere of her movie A Most Violent Year with gray hair. Also now wearing/showing their hair as gray or silver are Rihanna, Pink, Dascha Polanco and model Charlotte Free. Bravo to the influence of Boomer women like Cindy Joseph (shown in the picture here) over the fashion powers-that-be!
According to Ally, there are many more new fashion trends that she characterizes as “granny” – turtlenecks under dresses under scarves, oversized coats, sneakers worn with any kind of outfit, florals, lace, giant sunglasses, and more. Check out all the fun photos in the article, and note: most of these “granny” fashion elements are being sported by younger women. Gotta love it.
